Google is the 10,000 pound gorilla when it comes to search engine market share and the gorilla is still growing and feeding on Yahoo and MSN. Google continues its domination of the national search engine market with a commanding 58.5% of all US searches in October according to market researcher ComScore. Google is up 1.5 percentage points over September. Yahoo is in command of second place with 22.9 percent of the search market, down from 23.7 percent, and MSN is in third place at 9.7 percent which is down from 10.3 percent.
So where will Google go next to continue its domination? The mobile phone or better known as the mobile web. The iPhone has brought to life a better look into the future to see just how functional and user friendly a mobile phone can be. More than 30 companies have enrolled in the Open Handset Alliance of Google, an open development environment of the Internet for mobile devices. With Nokia owning close to 40% of the world cellphone market, they are aggressively buying up Web technology companies and many start-ups chasing the market as well. It should be an interesting next few years as this market gets better defined and the players establish their dominance with the mobile web.
